The Preparation

Page No.3

In Exodus 13.7, God says that during the Feast of Unleavened Bread, “no leaven is to be found in your household.” That being the case, before Passover begins, it is necessary to remove all foods containing leaven (yeast) from one’s home. Yeast-containing products include bread, cookies, cakes, crackers, breakfast cereals, pasta, etc. If we’re really serious, we do an extremely thorough cleaning, so that not even a crumb remains in the house. People will often spend days and even weeks making sure that their house is completely free of leavened products and remnants before Passover begins.

Now we know that the tradition of preparing for the Passover was also important to Jesus and His disciples as well. In Luke 22:8, the Bible tells us that Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.” When Peter and John asked where Jesus wanted them to prepare, He told them that they’d enter the city, see a man carrying a pitcher of water, follow him into a house, ask the master of the house about a guest room, and the man would show them a large upper room in which to prepare the Passover. Sure enough, Peter and John found the room, just as their Master said they would.

So we see how important preparation has always been for Passover, but why all the fuss? Perhaps it’s because of the symbolism of thoroughly cleaning our homes, and removing all signs of leaven. The Bible often uses leaven as a picture of sin. Painstakingly removing the crumbs of leaven from our homes is a picture of dealing with sin in our lives. It’s what the New Testament book of I Corinthians means when it tells us to “purge out the old leaven…” (I Corinthians 5:7).

Passover is really a great annual reminder to do something very important, which we should really be doing all year. Just as only cleaning your home once a year wouldn’t be enough, so too dealing with our sinfulness can’t be limited to special occasions, but it’s good to be reminded by these kinds of events.
