Pray for More Love

I John 5:14 tells us, “…if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” Well, we know that having God’s love in our hearts is His will, so we need to pray for that regularly. In fact, in Ephesians 3, there is a prayer that we’d benefit from if we studied it thoroughly. In this prayer, Paul is asking God on behalf of those at Ephesus for strength, faith, and love. But let’s just focus on the section pertaining to love:

“…that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:17-18

There is so much to the above prayer, but let’s just look at some of the phrases.

  • Rooted and grounded: Being rooted and grounded refers to having a solid foundation. Think of a tree will an intricate root system that simply cannot be moved. A person rooted and grounded in love will always walk and respond in love, no matter what the circumstance.

  • To Know: There are many different words in the Greek for knowledge, but the word used here refers to knowing by experience. It’s one thing to go to school for fire fighting, but it’s another thing to actually put out a fire. In this case, the Bible is talking about knowing the love of Christ by experience, rather than having some sort of textbook or intellectual understanding.

  • All the fullness of God: Wow! This is an awesome promise! It means that when we begin to know and understand Messiah’s love, we’ll begin to walk in all the fullness of God!

Begin to pray for more love in your life, according to the biblical way to pray, and watch what happens!
