As I Have Loved You

In I John 4:19, the Bible says “We love him because He first loved us.” In other words, God makes the first move with respect to loving us. This is in stark contrast to the way most of the world lives. 15:.., Jesus gave us a simple Luke 22:15-16, Jesus said “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

There are 2 things that strike us in Jesus’ statements here. The first thing that stands out is that Jesus earnestly desired to share the Passover with His disciples. The Amplified Bible brings this out a bit more: “I have eagerly and intensely desired…” Why did Jesus have such a great desire to share this Passover (or, Last Supper/Last Seder)? Now we know from Luke 2:41-42 that it was Jesus’ family custom to go to Jerusalem each year to observe Passover, as it was the custom of all the Jewish people. But still, what made this Passover stand out so much that Jesus eagerly wished to share it?

The second thing that seems unusual in the Luke 22 statement is that Jesus spoke of fulfilling the Passover. We normally don’t think of holidays or events being fulfilled, but that’s exactly what Jesus was talking about here.

In light of the above, as we go through the Passover in this series, we can really look at it from 3 different angles:

  1. At its face value, Passover is a celebration of the Exodus of the Jewish People from Egypt 3500 years ago.
  2. As we learn about the Passover celebration and its customs, it will help us to better understand what took place at that Last Supper 2000 years ago.
  3. We need to dig into the meaning of Passover that Jesus added to it in His fulfillment of it…
