Just Like Us

One way that the Bible differs from fairy tales and legends is that the heroes of the faith are normal people with weaknesses just like us. Let's look at one of the Bible's great heroes, Elijah, and see what it says about him:

“Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.” James 5:17-18

The Bible tells us here that Elijah was just like us, with weaknesses just like ours. Let's look at some of these:

He experienced fear when he was threatened by Jezebel.
He experienced deep depression in the desert.

With weaknesses like ours, he was still a spiritual giant. Why? The answer is found in the verse before James 5:17:

“The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” James 5:16

You see, it wasn't Elijah's extraordinary personality that got the job done. It was his faith and consistent prayers, the same faith we all can put into practice. So, let's learn to be more like Elijah, especially since he was just like us!
